Coming off of one of his worst seasons yet, Canuck Racing's Rayan Ioannidis was determined to perform at a high level in Season 16. He has certainly lived up to his goals.
Last season, Ioannidis was only able to muster 3 results and 6 top 9 finishes. It had certainly been a disappointment. As a result, however, team manager Andrew Cantarutti vowed to get to the bottom of his lack-luster performance and work on improvements. Ioannidis expressed that he had become depressed after leaving such a well-developed and talented team with NRK. As such, he was ill-prepared to bare most of the weight as Canuck Racing's captain. In order to rectify the situation, Cantarutti picked up Davin Wann in a crude business deal from Alberta 1. This temporarily instilled some confidence in Ioannidis. However, the deal did not work out due to logistics and Wann was transferred back to Alberta. Regardless of the sour deal, Ioannidis realized his potential for success aand began performing at the level that he was expected to.
The money received for reversing the Wann deal went to training a new, young, hilly sprinter in Anton Backman of Sweden. Backman has continually supported Ioannidis this season, but as his training continues, he will also be considered to possibly captain specific hilly sprint races.
This season, Ioannidis has won 2 races and acquired 9 results in a total of 12 top 9 finishes with 20 more days to go. Furthermore, he is the number 1 ranked rider in Cyprus above such power-houses as Miltos Tsoukas, Vagellis Kourdis, and Filipos Papakonstadinou.
According to Cantarutti, the future can only look bright for Rayan and the rest of Canuck Racing. After Backman's training is complete, the squad will look to develop Raymond Gaul, a New Zealander with great prospects.
